What We're Watching in September — Agent Security, Pay Transparency Fallout, and Alumni's Consolidation Moment

Happy September — the desk is back from a blessedly slow August, and the month ahead in HR tech looks anything but quiet.

Three threads we're watching closely between now and Q4 planning season.

Agent security moves from whitepaper to incident. We've been tracking the prompt-injection risk in HR's AI stack all summer — resume screeners steered by hostile candidate submissions, benefits bots leaking across permission lines. So far it's been mostly research and red-team demos. September is when the procurement questions get sharper: boards are asking HR vendors for red-team results, and we expect the first public "our screening agent got played" story to land before the month is out. If you're a vendor without an answer on this, that call is coming.

The pay transparency aftermath gets practical. The EU transposition deadline passed in June, and now the unglamorous part begins — member-state laws bedding in, laggard countries catching up, and employers discovering that publishing pay bands is the easy bit compared with defending them. Watch for the first wave of employee-side actions: workers using the new information rights to ask what colleagues in equivalent roles earn. That mechanism, not the postings, is where the real pressure builds. We'll be covering how large employers are handling the questions landing in HR inboxes.

Alumni platforms hit a consolidation moment. The post-employment category has been the sleeper trend of 2026 — alumni networks re-rated from courtesy programs to pipeline infrastructure, with rehiring and referrals carrying the budget case. We're now seeing the category's M&A temperature rise: the big HCM suites want this capability in the platform, and specialist vendors are deciding whether to sell, partner, or go deep. Expect at least one notable deal or major integration announcement before Q3 closes. We'll have the details when it moves.

Also on the radar: Q3 talent data landing over the next few weeks, which should confirm whether the "steady but selective" hiring posture held through summer, and the usual autumn conference season noise — treat vendor keynote claims accordingly, as ever.

That's the shape of the month. Keep the tab open — it's going to move fast.
